Quilt Quest (week 1) = T-Yarn

Upcycled Quilt Project

So I’ve decided to make a 100% upcycled “quilt” – I’m putting quilt in quotations out of a respect for the art form; considering how n00b mine is going to be, I hardly dare compare the two.

I was inspired by the growing pile t-shirts (and some polos) that=

  • I am far too attached to the event/place it represents .
  • Are colors and cuts that make me look short/washed-out/obese.
  • About to start cracking into a million ugly bits b/c they were super cheap decals.
  • No one would probably ever buy them in 1,000 years, not even for 1/1,000 if 1 cent (see points A-C).

The first step on this noble quest is the dismemberment of the t-shirts themselves=

  • The lower torso and stomach encircling areas will be shredded into T-Yarn (see tutorial below).
  • The chest area w/ decal will be surgically removed and set aside for later transplant into quilt.
  • The back , sleeves, and collar area will be boxed for later project – classification unknown. (Any ideas anyone?)

Tutorial to turn T-shirts into Yarn

  1. Trim off hem of t-shirt.
  2. Cut into raw under-edge of your t-shirt to create a strand somewhere between 1/2″ and 1″ wide.
  3. Cut a continuous strand around the body of the t-shirt.
